Well, it is the Nutrition Information Panel that sits on your food label.

And it’s something that *whispers* you can do yourself. I can hear your jaw dropping right this moment.

But Roslyn, do I need a NIP on my food label?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you do for most products. Standard 1.2.8 of the Food Standards Code says so.

It needs to show the average quantities of:

  • Energy in kilojoules
  • Protein
  • Fat
  • Saturated fat
  • Carbohydrate
  • Sugars
  • Sodium

And it needs to show the food and serving in both 100g or 100mL.

Seems confusing? Well, it doesn’t have to be!

Today I spoke to a new client who has been busy developing her product for the last 2 years. A food consultant has assisted her, she has a contract packer ready to make her food product and is now ready to sit down with her designer to create the labels.

As she was explaining her call for help, the anguish she has been through, and the product development roller coaster she had been riding, she became teary and sounded downright exhausted. The overwhelm of the process had taken its toll.

And one of the things that she said stuck in my mind. She told me that only last week she discovered that Food Standards Code existed.

She felt like such a fool to spend 2 years developing a product and not know about the food regulations and food laws to comply to.

I realized that there must be many more food entrepreneurs and food startups in the same situation.

FSANZ Tastebuddies Country of Origin

You may have already started to see the new Country of Origin Food Labelling (I’m going to call this CoOL from now on…) little logos on many items in the supermarket.

However, Inside FMCG has reported that many businesses may face are fines as their labels are unlikely to meet the deadline. They reported, “It’s the small-to-medium-sized businesses that are falling behind because they either don’t have the resources available or don’t have a proper understanding of the requirements under the new laws.”

OK… small food businesses….. let’s tick this off the to-do list.

No Added Sugar has become a popular claim on food products to satisfy the needs of consumers who have quit sugar, on a low carb or Ketogenic diet.

When can I claim No Added Sugar?

FSANZ outlines you can only claim No Added Sugar when the food contains:

  • no added sugars*, honey, malt, or malt extracts

or the

  • food contains no added concentrated fruit juice or deionized fruit juice.
